Regional
Associations of Grantmakers
Regional associations exist to enhance the effectiveness of private philanthropy in
distinct geographic regions (city, state, or multi-state areas). They respond to the
specific needs and interests of their members.
In addition to holding annual conferences and various
educational programs, many RAGs support peer networking groups for trustees and staff of
family philanthropies. A growing number also offer publications directed towards donors
and trustees.
Affinity
Groups of Grantmakers
Affinity groups and specific-interest grantmaking associations represent a variety of
different causes, issues, and population groups. Although many are volunteer-managed, a
growing number are formally organized, have obtained 501(c)(3) status, and have paid
staff. Both informal networks and formal organizations provide current and useful
information for grantmakers on specific funding areas. Some offer technical assistance,
publish newsletters and other publications and several conduct workshops and conferences.
