November 10: Giving While Living: In honor of the Thanksgiving season, we’re pleased to share the transcript and recording of last week’s very special teleconference call on the opportunities and obligations of ”Giving While Living,” featuring a conversation with Gara LaMarche, President and CEO, The Atlantic Philanthropies, and Lenore Hanisch, co-executive director and board and family member of the Quixote Foundation.

Based on findings from the National Center's new report, "The Power to Produce Wonders," this call is essential for anyone seeking to understand and make the case for continued support of the remarkable phenomenon that is American family philanthropy.
January 13: Aging America and Why it Matters to your Mission: Aging influences nearly every aspect of our communities and nation. Regardless of your funding interests, older adults are increasingly relevant to your work. This timely call featuring Carol Farquhar from Grantmakers in Aging and a family foundation active in this field will provide suggestions for emerging strategies for turning America's aging population into a powerful asset, and will provide you with an essential new lens for your grantmaking.
January 23 (New York): Investing in Early Childhood Programs That Lead to Reading by 3rd Grade: This session, organized by the National Center in partnership with the Annie E. Casey Foundation, will bring together family foundation peers to share strategies, learn about what works, determine ways to know if you are making a difference, and explore collaborations that could enhance your work. The target audience includes those who fund the variety of programs designed to prepare vulnerable children, from infancy on up, to be ready for school and achieve the national goal of reading by third grade!
January 23-25 (New York) Bridges: The 2011 Family Philanthropy Conference: This exciting and re-imagined event will build upon the traditional conference model to present an inspired and arts-infused experience, featuring new ways to connect with peers and experience New York City as never before. March 23-24 (Washington, DC) Family Foundation CEO Symposium: Planning for the first-ever National Symposium on the role of family foundation CEOs is underway. This symposium is a central component of the National Center's new Family Foundation CEO Initiative, which will assist the National Center in developing a blueprint for use by foundation leaders, including trustees, to maximize board-staff relationships, address professional development needs, and plan for transitions to new leaders in family philanthropy.
National Center Announces New Friends Recognition Fund: The Springs Close Foundation recently celebrated the 85th birthday of Anne Springs Close, chair of the foundation, with a special gift in her name to a new fund at the National Center for Family Philanthropy. Close is the first to be recognized in this new fund, recently established by our Friends of the Family Advisory Committee. Those wishing to honor a donor, family member, trustee, or a philanthropic family are invited to make a gift to the National Center in their name. We will be archiving the stories of the honorees, featuring them in our Knowledge Center, Family Giving News and our other resources (and if you missed it, be sure to read Ginny Esposito's tribute to Ms. Close in this month's issue!).

Family Philanthropy Online Video Tutorials Now Available: The Family Philanthropy Online Knowledge Center is a searchable and regularly updated collection of more than 1,200 articles, case studies, profiles, presentations, reports, sample policies and discussion papers related to family philanthropy. This two-part video tutorial provides a brief overview of the FP Online service. Part I provides basic instructions for searching the knowledge center; Part II outlines several new features and customized search tools available within Family Philanthropy Online. The two five-minute videos are available here.
The Eisner Prize for Intergenerational Excellence: In 2011, The Eisner Foundation in Los Angeles will award the inaugural Eisner Prize. The Foundation is currently soliciting nominations of individuals or non-profit organizations from all across the United States for this prestigious honor. The Eisner Prize is a cash award of $100,000 and is designed to recognize excellence by an individual or a non-profit organization in uniting multiple generations, especially seniors and youth, to bring about positive and lasting changes in their community.
