Values to Vision to Action: The Hill-Snowdon Foundation Journey

The Hill-Snowdon Foundation, July 2010

To commemorate its 50th anniversary since its founding, 10th anniversary of its strategic grantmaking program, and 5th anniversary of becoming an independent, staffed family foundation, the Hill-Snowdon Foundation has released a new report entitled Values to Vision to Action: The Hill-Snowdon Foundation Journey. Authored by National Center Vice President Susan C. Price, it tells the story of one small family foundation’s transformation from check-writing around the kitchen table to a nationally known organization. Hill-Snowdon Foundation hopes that its experiences and lessons learned will be informative for other family foundations that want to know how to leverage their dollars for more impact, how to work with grantees as true partners, and how to maintain the family’s engagement while also practicing strategic grantmaking. Values to Vision to Action includes a history of the foundation, as well as sample documents: an Executive Director job description, grant write-up for the board, board policies, and trustee orientation guidelines.
