The Strong Field Framework: A Guide and Toolkit for Funders and Nonprofits Committed to Large-Scale Impact
The Bridgespan Group and James Irvine Foundation,
July 2009
Many foundations have come to believe that their bold aspirations and far-reaching goals can only be realized through a critical mass of organizations and individuals working together effectively as a field.
As part of its work to advance the multiple pathways approach to high school education, the James Irvine Foundation engaged The Bridgespan Group to develop an approach to assessing the nature and needs of the fields in which funders and nonprofits work together to create social change. These agents of change often struggle to understand how to focus their field-building investments and activities because they lack a comprehensive and coherent map of their fields’ strengths and weaknesses. The Strong Field Framework provides a guide for building more robust fields and can help foundations prioritize their field-building efforts and investments.
