Nation’s Leading Voice for Family Philanthropy Welcomes New Leadership

Washington, DC (May 18, 2011) - The National Center for Family Philanthropy today announced its new board chair is Caroline Avery, President, the Durfee Foundation. She succeeds Mary Mountcastle, Trustee, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. Also, five new members have joined the board: Sarah K. Miller, Adjunct Board Member, RGK Foundation; Richard L. (Skip) Moore, President, Weaver Foundation; Nina Waters, President, Community Foundation in Jacksonville; Ridgway H. White, Vice President of Special Projects, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation; and Frank J. Wideman III, President, The Self Family Foundation.
Avery’s long and distinguished career includes service as chair of the Board of Directors of Northern California Grantmakers, co-chair of the board of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area, and service as a past trustee of Pitzer College in Claremont, California.
“Carrie Avery is one of philanthropy’s most gifted leaders,” says Ginny Esposito, president of the National Center. “I am so pleased she is lending her considerable knowledge, experience, leadership, and vision to the National Center for Family Philanthropy.”
Other board officers are: Vice Chair William C. Graustein, Trustee, William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund; Secretary Bruce Maza, Executive Director, C.E. & S. Foundation, and Treasurer Linda Perryman Evans, President and CEO of the Meadows Foundation.
New members of the National Center’s board bring a wealth of philanthropy experience:
Sarah K. Miller has been an adjunct board member of the RGK Foundation of Austin, Texas since 1998. During that time she has chaired the adjunct board as well as participated on the grants, finance, and governance committees for the foundation and also interned for the Austin Community Foundation.
Richard L. (Skip) Moore is President of the Weaver Foundation, a family foundation serving Greensboro, North Carolina. Prior to joining the Weaver Foundation, he had a 30-year career in higher education, including at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he was Vice Chancellor for University Advancement.
Nina Waters has been President of The Community Foundation in Jacksonville since 2005. Prior to joining the foundation, she served as Executive Director for the PACE Center for Girls Jacksonville program for 12 years.
Ridgway H. White is Vice President of Special Projects at the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Flint, Michigan. He started with the foundation in 2004 as a program assistant on the Flint Area grantmaking team. He was promoted to program officer in 2009, and in that capacity, he also served as a loaned executive to the nonprofit Uptown Reinvestment Corporation (URC).
Frank Wideman is president of the Self Family Foundation in Greenwood, SC. Wideman, who has been active in organized philanthropy on the regional and national level, leads a foundation that focuses primarily on education and health care in Greenwood and surrounding counties.
