The Better Boardroom: a Complimentary Lunch Seminar for Giving Families (Chicago)

Family foundations are a breed apart. The impact of family structure and dynamics on how a foundation is governed is enormous and consistently underestimated.  Join us for an overview of how to truly integrate the family into family foundation governance.

The program will cover these essentials:

  • Forgotten factors – how family dynamics, family size and family structure should guide decisions on board size, composition, terms and structure – but often don’t.

  • Board engagement– what boards and board members should do…and getting them to do it.

  • Overcoming obstacles to family participation

  • Preventive policy– how advance planning can transform how family does business in the board room

This program was created by the National Center for Family Philanthropy, the country’s foremost authority on family foundation governance, management and grantmaking, and underwritten by a Meadows Foundation grant for trustee education.

Our speaker is Karen Green, an authority on family foundation governance, management, and grantmaking who led the national effort to create the Stewardship Principles for Family Foundations.  An independent consultant to family foundations, Green has more than 20 years’ experience in philanthropy. Past positions include Vice President of the National Center for Family Philanthropy, President of the Healthcare Initiative Foundation, and Managing Director of Family Foundation Services at the Council on Foundation.  Green holds an MPA from Harvard University and a BA from Cornell University.
