McKnight Foundation expands staffing commitment to impact investing

In July, The McKnight Foundation announced that it had hired Elizabeth McGeveranas its first-ever Impact Investing Program Director. This new position will manage program-related and mission-driven investments for the Foundation and is “an important next step in McKnight’s broad commitment to channel an initial target of $200 million into impact investments that generate financial return, uphold fiduciary duties, and align with strategies to advance McKnight’s program impact and learning.”

Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund announces strategy to embrace public education reform

feature-Haas-Education-Equity-Newsletter

Ira Hirschfield, President of the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund has announced that the Fund will embrace education reform in the San Francisco Unified School District as a future priority. Haas Jr. Fund Vice President of Programs Sylvia Yee adds that the Fund realizes that “schools will have to change dramatically, and changing institutions is not an easy thing to do. Strong leadership is critical for making Vision 2025 real, so in addition to funding the visioning process, the Haas, Jr. Fund is also investing in the leadership necessary to transform teaching and learning in every school, for every child.”

Courageous Storytelling on climate change at the Compton Foundation

According to a recent article in Inside Philanthropy, the Compton Foundation is using its new Courageous Storytelling program to “breathe some life into green news.” The article reports that the Compton Foundation provided $40,000 in 2014 to the Climate Desk, a collaborative journalism project designed to fill the gap in climate change coverage involving Mother Jones, The Atlantic, Huffington Post, The Guardian, Grist, Slate, Wired, and the Center for Investigative Reporting.

In memoriam: Lani Shaw of the General Service Foundation

LaniJackKatie

NCFP was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Lani Shaw, long-time CEO of the General Service Foundation based in Aspen, Colorado. “Lani Shaw was the embodiment of how I think of transformative leadership —she lived it without having to define it,” wrote colleague Ellen Friedman, executive director of the Compton Foundation in a touching message on the foundation’s website. “Lani showed us what leadership can and should be: kind, values driven, collaborative, dependable, expansive, generous, and brave.”

Tauck Family Foundation collaborates on new report on strategies for improving low-income students’ social and emotional skills

This new report describes the work undertaken by the Tauck Family Foundation and Child Trends, a national leader in measuring children’s development and well-being, and provides the results of that work. Child Trends’ and the Foundation’s primary goal was to create tools that the Foundation’s investees could use to assess and monitor the extent to which the organizations are improving low-income students’ social and emotional skills associated with success in school and life. A secondary goal was to provide these tools and related guidance to other educators across the country who share a desire to strengthen students’ social and emotional skills as a strategy for supporting their success.

Packard Foundation and others launch Fund for Shared Insight to make grants to improve philanthropy

The David and Lucile Packard Foundation is one of several national funders behind the new Fund for Shared Insight. This Fund will award one- to three-year grants to nonprofit organizations to encourage and incorporate feedback from the people the social sector seeks to help; understand the connection between feedback and better results; foster more openness between and among foundations and grantees; and share what social-sector organizations learn.

Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation launches blog initiative and releases videos on sustainability and conservation

The Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation has launched a series of blog posts that explores a spectrum of conservation initiatives from a global community of conservationists tackling similar puzzles with wildly different tactics. The guest author list includes such voices as former First Lady Laura Bush and Founder, Taking Care of Texas; Tensie Whelan, President, The Rainforest Alliance; Ernest Cook, Senior Vice President and Director, The Land for Public Trust; Larry Selzer, President and CEO, The Conservation Fund; and Blair Fitzsimmons, CEO, The Texas Agricultural Land Trust.
The foundation also introduced two videos on issues important to the foundation. One narrative helps answer why their grantmaking programs focus on issues related to sustainability; the other tells one story of why the family is passionate about issues related to conservation.
