In tribute to Leonard Aube, Executive Director of the Annenberg Foundation

NCFP staff were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Leonard Aube, Executive Director of the Annenberg Foundation, who passed away recently after courageously battling cancer for two years. Mr. Aube and the Annenberg Foundation

joined NCFP’s Leadership Circle several years ago, and were wonderful supporters of NCFP’s CEO Initiative. In a letter to members of the Southern California Grantmakers community, SCG Board Chair Wendy Garen and President and CEO Christine Essel wrote of Aube,

“His tireless enthusiasm was an inspiration to all of us in the SCG community, and it's impossible to measure the profound impact of Len's lifelong work to improve communities throughout Southern California—and beyond. Len was a kind and elegant man who was relentless in the pursuit of excellence and impact, and fearless in tackling major problems that would have daunted most of us.”

The Sobrato Family Foundation hosts a Thriving Nonprofit Sector program speaker series

In early 2014, The Sobrato Family Foundation created their Thriving Nonprofit Sector Program to increase the impact of their nonprofit partners through nonprofit leadership development and training programs. A component to this program is their speaker series, “Building Blocks for Creating Impact.” This speaker series provides a space for nonprofit, philanthropy, and government leaders to explore ways to strengthen local programs and services, together. To date, there are six sessions that you can find on The Sobrato Family Foundation YouTube channel.

Schusterman Family Foundation Launches 18-Month Global Fellowship for Jewish Leaders

The Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation recently announced the launching of its Schusterman Fellowship. The goal of this fellowship, according to Founder and Co- Chair of the Schusterman Family Foundation Lynn Schusterman, is to “nurture professional and volunteer leadership as an important way to create transformational change in the Jewish community and beyond.” This 18- month executive leadership program will provide individuals to pursue opportunities that best tailors to their personal and professional interests. The inaugural cohort of 24 Fellows will work at a range of Jewish and secular nonprofit and for- profit organizations and participate in cohort- based learning with access to a mentor.

How Family Foundations Can Pass on the Philanthropy Flame to the Next Generation

In this Wall Street Journal article focused on the perpetuity of family foundations, the Siragusa Foundation and Tracy Family Foundation are highlighted for their robust strategy for engaging the next generation in their family's philanthropy. To establish a strong legacy and ensure that younger generations feel more connected to the founder, the foundation produced a monograph of Mr. Siragusa's life. In addition to sharing the history of the foundation, the Tracy Family Foundation ensures that there are opportunities for the younger family members to have a voice and vote in the organization's operations.

Media Impact Funders to host a series of events for funders about the internet, communication strategies, civic engagement, music, and public media

Media Impact Funders, an affinity group comprised of members representing foundations, government agencies, donor affinity groups, philanthropic advisors, and individual donors, serves as a learning resource for grantmakers interested in using media to further their missions and create social change. They will be hosting two funder briefings in Seattle, WA and an event focused on funder dialogue on civic engagement, music, and public media in Philadelphia, PA

 What’s Next for the Internet

April 30, 2015 @ 2:00 – 4:00 pm | Philanthropy Northwest Office |  Seattle, WA

Many funders have been supporting efforts to solidify net neutrality protections and open Internet principles for over a decade. Last year, four million people commented on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) proposed Internet rules, and the President called for true open Internet protections, including reclassification of the Internet under Title II jurisdiction. This February the FCC voted to reclassify the Internet and stop states from banning municipal broadband networks. The rate of change has been dizzying.

Please join Michael Copps, special advisor to Common Cause’s Media and Democracy Reform Initiative and former FCC Commissioner, and June Wilson, co-executive director and board member at the Quixote Foundation for a dialogue with Vince Stehle, executive director of Media Impact Funders about this fast-changing landscape and the implications for grantmakers and grantees alike.
