Like a compass, values guide us toward decisions that align with who we are. But a compass only works when you trust it. When you find yourself surrounded by disruptive activities, I encourage you to call on your values and find direction in them.
These aren’t aspects of success that you can measure with metrics or data, and they are things that many funders often either take for granted or completely overlook. Yet, when they are present, they make a night-and-day difference in effectiveness.
Instead of aligning all of our foundation’s investments with our mission, we have carved out a small portion of the corpus of one of the foundations under the EJF Philanthropies umbrella. By setting aside this portion, we have not had to put a large amount of money to work.
Family foundations are legally organized entities with specific rules, requirements and obligations. They have a board of directors commonly made up of family members. They are most often established in perpetuity, creating the eventual challenge of when and how to involve the next generation.

Creation of a good mission statement is a worthwhile endeavor. It involves and educates current and future stakeholders, enforces focus, clarifies decision-making, and provides valuable information to nonprofits and other donors alike.
A couple years ago I realized the Knott Foundation was approaching 40 years as a Catholic family foundation! The time was ripe to pause, reflect on our work, and find ways to commemorate the Foundation. Enter the idea of creating a donor legacy video.
Acknowledging that we are not living in a post-racist or post-poverty environment and learning how and why these issues exist today and continue to interfere with the fulfillment of human potential is a fundamentally key and critical part of the work that we are doing in this exploratory period of our work.
