NCFP’s benchmark Trends in Family Philanthropy study found that 20% of the youngest family foundations have decided to operate with a limited lifespan, and more than 60% of all foundations are considering or have decided upon this option. Join this network to speak with other funders considering limiting their lifespan or who have made the decision to spend down. This peer network is co-chaired by two field leaders, Barbara Kibbe, director at the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, and Lois Mitchell, philanthropy consultant and former president of the Orfalea Foundations.

Managing Messaging: All-way communication for spend-down foundations & funds
NCFP’s Strategic Lifespan Peer Network is a special group of friends of the family and those across the field who are thinking about or have the made the decision to limit the lifespan of their foundation. Whether you have attended the peer network before or you are new or curious, join us to discuss messaging and all-way communication to address of the needs and interests of stakeholders from grantees to funding partners to the media. We will address key tactics and strategies identified from the network:

Barbara Kibbe joined the S. D. Bechtel Junior Foundation as director of organizational effectiveness in 2013. She came to the Foundation with 25 years of experience in philanthropy as an executive, a consultant, a grantmaker, and a foundation program director working with family, private, corporate, and community foundations. Barbara is co-author of Succeeding with Consultants and Grantmaking Basics. In 2010, she co-authored What’s Next for Philanthropy. She is a founder of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO), an organization dedicated to building knowledge, promoting learning, and encouraging dialogue on nonprofit and grantmaker effectiveness. Barbara holds a B.A. in art from Wagner College and a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.
Lois Mitchell has extensive experience directing philanthropic initiatives, navigating strategic plans, and building key partnerships with cross-sector leadership. She guides multi-generational family, community, corporate, private, and operating foundations to build governance, processes, organizational culture, legacy, branded programs and facilitated retreats, forums and board sessions. As President of the Orfalea Foundations from 2000-2015, Mitchell led a 20+ member team through innovative collaborations, audacious campaigns, public events, and an intentional sunset spend-down.
