Balancing Power Dynamics
Board members, staff, advisors, and donors in family philanthropy.
How can you use your privilege to address the power imbalances that exist between funders and community partners? How can your board members build more honest and collaborative relationships, while also supporting other funders in building more authentic relationships with their grantees? This conversation will feature a variety of practical tips for bridging the power divide with your grantees, with one another, and with other partners in your work.
Farhad Ebrahimi is the founder and chair of the Chorus Foundation, which works for a just transition to a regenerative economy in the United States. The Chorus Foundation supports communities on the front lines of the old, extractive economy to build new bases of political, economic, and cultural power for systemic change. Through his work with Chorus, Farhad is most interested in the question of how philanthropy might play a role in putting itself out of business. Which is to say, how can the redistribution of consolidated wealth support the transition to a world in which such wealth is no longer extracted and consolidated in the first place? It is in this context that Chorus will be spending down its entire endowment by 2023. Farhad serves on the boards of the Democracy Alliance and the Wildfire Project. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with Computer Science, and he currently lives in Brooklyn.
John Mullaney has been the Executive Director of the Nord Family Foundation since April 1998. Prior to his tenure at The Nord Family Foundation, Mr. Mullaney served in both the education and non-profit sectors and developing countries. He was a program and research manager at Harvard University’s Institute for International Development and a program director for the Latin American Scholarship Program of American Universities, also at Harvard University. In each of his positions, he had the opportunity to work directly with university faculty and public officials in Latin America, Europe and Africa. His experience in philanthropy began in 1982 as a country representative for Catholic Relief Services in El Salvador during that country’s civil war. John completed his undergraduate education at Boston College and a Master’s degree from Georgetown University.
Laura McCargar was appointed as President of the Perrin Family Foundation (PFF) in June of 2016. Laura joined the foundation in 2011 as a Program Officer, where she played a central role in designing the foundation’s youth-led social change grantmaking and the oversaw the development and implementation of capacity building initiatives designed to strengthen, promote and expand youth organizing across Connecticut.Laura’s work in the philanthropic sector and her deep belief in the power of youth-led social change is informed by her experience as a youth worker and organizer.
Prior to joining the Perrin Family Foundation, Laura was awarded a Soros Justice Fellowship from Open Society Foundations to engage in research and organizing around the previously little known role that alternative schools and adult education programs play in Connecticut’s school-to-prison pipeline. From 2002-2010, Laura served as the founding Executive Director of Youth Rights Media, a New Haven-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth to use media and organizing strategies to create community change.
David Perrin is a Trustee at the Perrin Family Foundation in Connecticut. He served as Program Officer for the Foundation from 2004-06. David has been actively involved in transitioning the Foundation from a social service focus to youth social justice. He served on the Resource Generation Board of Directors, Council on Foundations Family Philanthropy Committee, and as an intern at the Haymarkets People Fund. David works as a meditation teacher and mentor. He lives in New York City with partner Anne Kenan and children Rhese, Bodin, and June.

Creating Effective Next Gen Boards was by far the best webinar I have experienced. The material was well put together, well presented, easy to follow, and very engrossing! The youth on the webinar were very articulate and experienced and provided a unique insight into the benefits and pitfalls in involving 8 year-olds and up in family philanthropy, i.e. the younger we start, the better and easier it is for everyone!
