Every family philanthropy experiences the joy, the sadness, the complexity, and the energy of transitions. Moving toward new leadership in the family can be difficult, emotional, and sometimes frustrating. However, when it is done deliberately and thoughtfully, these times of transition can also be positive for all involved. Times of transition are both a challenge and an opportunity for all family members. This webinar shares the stories and lessons learned by two family foundations that successfully navigated the tricky waters of leadership transition.

What others have said...

I thought this was a very insightful look into different challenges that a family foundation can face at any given time during their operation. I believe the presentations from the individuals representing the Kaplan and Phillips foundations were vey beneficial in supporting the topic.

I have found the webinars to be extremely useful as I prepare to step into the role of president of our family foundation. I love hearing from others who have gone before me, so I can learn from their experience. I always leave the webinars with new ideas about many complex issues.

3rd generation director, small family foundation

The webinar was extremely informative. All the speakers presented valuable and realistic lessons on when to start enlisting discussions on succession of leadership.

Candid discussion of the issues facing family foundations in transition.

We are facing a major transition in leadership from the second generation to the third – the webinar was very helpful.

We will be transitioning leadership over the course of this year and I will be taking over as President. I will use some of what I learned to help bring the board along as we take the next step. I especially appreciated what Ginny Esposito had to say, and I may use Betsy Brill’s Pillars of Success and Continuity.

I am non-family professional staff. Is was really helpful to hear from others who are working through the issues of generational shift and next gen trustee engagement.

Although our foundation is smaller than the two represented today, I found the discussion of the evolution of both foundations from check writing through very thoughtful processes to where they are today.
